Chapel Crest Baptist Church was founded by Rev. and Sis. Curtis Mays, Sr. in February of 1967. Prior to this, they were members of the Tabernacle Baptist Church. He served as a Deacon under the Leadership of the late Rev. Moses Reagans, Sr.. Rev and Sis Mays served faithfully for over ten years at Tabernacle Baptist Church. God elevated Rev. Mays vision and dream to the position of Pastor. He began a work which had the potential to make an impact on this entire city, state, and nation. What a dream! For three years Rev. Mays extended his humility, faithfulness, dedication, wisdom, and love while pastoring at Chapel Crest Baptist Church. In 1970 he passed on to be with the Lord. CCBC began a search for a Pastor in 1970.
Rev. Carl E. Loftis was called to service, he served as the Pastor until 1974. Chapel Crest began to look again for a new pastor, someone who was able to further the dream. Rev, Odell Pate was called to pastor in 1975. Under his leadership the church mortgage was paid for in full. On July 15,1975 the note was burned. The CCBC Junior Choir was established. Rev. Pate passed on to glory to be with the Lord on November 30,1977.
Rev. Detroit Williams was interim pastor for approximately two years after Rev. Pate’s passing. Under his leadership, Clarence J. McClenton, Sr. and Carnell Mays were ordained as deacons on June 18, 1978. After leaving Chapel Crest, Rev. Detroit Williams continued working in other churches until God called him home. In 1979, Rev. Ray Lester Brown was called to pastor the church. During this time, the foundation for the new church was laid, the shell of the church was erected. Curtis L. Mays, Jr. and Doran Mays were ordained as Deacons. Rev. Brown pastored at CCBC until 1980.
Chapel Crest began looking for a new pastor. Rev. Chester Brookins was called to fill the position. Rev. Brookins served at Chapel Crest for a very short period of time. He succumbed to an illness and went home to be with the Lord. CCBC once again began searching for a pastor. Rev. British U. Tharpe was called to pastor the church on January 18, 1981. The new church was completed under his leadership. Rev. Tharpe began to work on the vision of building God fearing People. Rev. Tharpe remained at Chapel Crest Baptist Church for seventeen years. In January of 1998, he resigned and organized Berea Baptist Church.
In August of 1998, Rev. Rickye L. Scott was called to Pastor CCBC. Under his leadership, he was instrumental in CCBC joining the Fellowship Missionary District Association, led by Moderator Rev. C.C. Robertson. He also ordained a faithful brother of the church, Willard Gene Davis as a deacon. God elevated Deacon Willard G. Davis to become a preacher of the Gospel. With Rev. Scott's blessings, Rev. Davis preached his first sermon on Mother's Day (May 9, 2004). His Sermon was attended by his wife, mother, now deceased, many of his relatives and members of CCBC family. Rev. Davis served faithfully on the Ministerial Staff at CCBC under the leadership of Rev. Scott, his father in the ministry until God called him home. We now have a "Special Building Fund" Program that Rev. Rickye L. Scott asked the members to contribute to once a month, they did and still do! Rev. Rickye L. Scott started the R.L.S. Layman's/Ministries Conference in 2001. The Conference was very successful, so much so, that he made it one of our annual programs. In October of 2019 - God placed it on the heart of Pastor Scott to move in a different direction in Ministry. The Chapel Crest Church Family was truly blessed by his faithful Service.
The CCBC family was again without Pastoral leadership while dealing with a pandemic, but through it all God keep the church family together. On October 8, 2019, Minister Lynn Mays was voted in as the Interim pastor where he served faithfully while the church searched for a new leader. The CCBC church family will forever be thankful to Minister Mays for his leadership. To this day Minister Lynn Mays still faithfully serves on the ministerial staff at CCBC.
On Tuesday, February 1, 2022, Pastor Keven D. Johnson was selected as the new pastor of the Chapel Crest Baptist Church. The CCBC church family is very thankful that God sent a Shepherd after His own heart. We look forward to a glorious future under the leadership of Pastor. Johnson.
